The Fifth Edition of the Riviera Maya Film Festival will take place
on June 24 to 30 in Playa del Carmen and Cancun.
From July the 2nd the screenings will continue in Puerto Morelos, Tulum and Isla Mujeres.
The RMFF celebrates along with its audience five years of films being shared in the State of Quintana Roo. From June 24 to 30, Playa del Carmen and Cancun will host the first set of screening sessions, and the lecture series Teachings/2016.
On July the 2nd to the 6th, a selection of the most outstanding films of the program will arrive to Puerto Morelos, to continue from the 7th to the 9th in Tulum. Activities will be closing in Isla Mujeres, from July 14 to 16.
“Through such initiatives, the State of Quintana Roo is placing itself, globally, as an attractive place to enjoy quality cultural events.” Said Engineer Raul Andrade, State Secretary of Tourism. Andrade highlighted the importance of the RMFF in promoting the region as one with a valuable proffer of cultural tourism.
Paula Chaurand, director and founder of the RMFF, pointed out that this year the Festival will have 18 days of continuous screening sessions, according to the goal that was born five years ago.
“The RMFF 2016 will bring charge-free quality films to firmly keep its commitment to become an engine of cultural growth for Quintana Roo, encouraging and spreading outstanding film creations to the widest number possible of spectators.” Said Chaurand.
Along these five years, the RMFF has screened 250 films that are, altogether, a framework and a compound of aesthetic and topical trends in the international film industry.
Thus, for its Fifth Edition, the Festival has prepared a programming that features premiers in Mexico of the films that are currently leading in the most prestigious film festivals of the world.
During the press conference some of the titles to be featured were announced. Among them is
“Miles Davis” (“Miles Ahead”), film by Don
Cheadle about the great jazz musician; “Malgré la nuit”, (“Despite the Night”) the work by
Philippe Grandrieux; “Maggie’s Plan”, a comedy
by Rebecca Miller, starring Julianne Moore and Ethan Hawke; “I Saw the Light”, a biographic film about the musician Hank Williams, directed by Marc Abraham;
“Eva no duerme” (“Eva doesn’t Sleep”) by Argentinian director Pablo Agüero, starring Gael García;
“Bang Gang”, the defiant debut film by
Eva Husson; and “Erosión”, the documentary film by Sergio Santiago and Carlos Underwood, which is the second production completely from Quintana Roo, shown in the Festival.
It has been announced that, within the Germany- Mexico Dual Year, the RMFF has convened with The Goethe Institut Mexiko, to present a selection of German films during the Festival.
Also for this edition, the RMFF is in alliance with the digital platform FilminLatino, to enable viewers from all over the country, to access a selection of films from the programming.
Teachings/2016 and Youth Program RMFF
For this fifth edition, the festival has received more than 200 applications from young people to conform the Youth Jury and more than 160 to participate as Hosts RMFF. These figures show the impact of the call among the local youth population.
It is for this segment of the population that the lecture series RMFF/Teachings has been created and will be taking place, for the second time within the Festival, on June 27 and 28 at the Blue Parrot beach club, Playa del Carmen. In four sessions each day, prominent members of the film industry will be sharing their expertise with the audience.
The Riviera Maya Film Festival will give a press conference on July 14, in Mexico City, to announce its complete programming, as well as the films selected to compete in the section Mexican Platform, and the final program for RMFF/Teachings 2016.

La quinta edición del festival se realizará del 24 al 30 de junio en Playa del Carmen y Cancún. A partir del 2 julio continuará en Puerto Morelos, Tulum e Isla Mujeres.
Cinco años de compartir cine en el estado de Quintana Roo. Esto es lo que el Riviera Maya Film Festival celebrará con su público del 24 al 30 de junio en Playa del Carmen y Cancún, sedes que albergarán la primera etapa de las actividades de exhibición y el encuentro académico Formación 2016.
Los festejos del RMFF continuarán con la proyección de lo más destacado de su programación durante el mes de julio: del 2 al 6 llegará a Puerto Morelos, del 7 al 9 arribará a Tulum y cerrará actividades del 14 al 16 en Isla Mujeres.
“Con iniciativas como esta, el estado se está posicionando a nivel mundial como un lugar atractivo para disfrutar de eventos de calidad”, explicó Andrade.
El Ingeniero Raúl Andrade, Secretario de Turismo del Estado, destacó la importancia del RMFF en la promoción de la región como un espacio con una amplia oferta de turismo cultural.
Por su parte, Paula Chaurand, directora y fundadora del RMFF, subrayó la importancia de que en este año el festival cuenta con 18 días de proyecciones, ya que de esta forma se cumple con la intención que vio nacer al festival hace cinco años.
“RMFF2016 ofrecerá gratuitamente cine de calidad para mantenerse firme en la búsqueda del objetivo con el que nació hace cinco años: convertirse en un motor de desarrollo cultural para el estado de Quintana Roo a través de la promoción y difusión de propuestas fílmicas sobresalientes al mayor número de espectadores posible”, señaló Chaurand.
A lo largo de estos cinco años, el RMFF ha proyectado un total de 250 filmes que en su conjunto son un parámetro y una síntesis de las tendencias temáticas y estéticas de la industria cinematográfica internacional.
Siguiendo esta línea, para su quinta edición el RMFF prepara una programación con estrenos en México de filmes que están marcando pautas en los festivales más prestigiados del mundo.
Durante la conferencia de prensa se adelantaron algunos de los títulos que se proyectarán, entre ellos se encuentran “Miles Davis” (Miles Ahead), filme de Don Cheadle sobre el célebre jazzista; “A pesar de la noche” (Malgré la nuit), obra del propositivo Philippe Grandrieux; “Maggie tiene un plan” (Maggi’s Plan), comedia de Rebecca Miller protagonizada por Julianne Moore y Ethan Hawke; “Vi la luz” (I Saw the Light), biopic sobre el músico Hank Williams dirigida por Marc Abraham; “Eva no duerme”, filme del Argentino Pablo Agüero en el que actúa Gael García ; “Bang Gang, Una Historia de Amor Moderna” (Bang Gang), provocadora ópera prima de Eva Husson, y “Erosión”, documental de Sergio Santiago y Carlos Underwood que representa la segunda ocasión en que el festival proyecta una producción completamente quintanarroense.
Además se anunció que en el marco del Año dual Alemania-México, el RMFF estableció una alianza con el Goethe Institut Mexiko para proyectar películas del país europeo durante el festival.
De igual forma, el RMFF 2016 también estableció alianza con la plataforma digital FilminLatino, con la intención de que los espectadores del resto del país puedan tener acceso a una selección de títulos del festival.
Formación 2016 y jóvenes RMFF
Esta edición el RMFF recibió un total de más de 200 candidaturas para formar parte del Jurado Joven de la quinta edición y más de 160 para participar como Anfitriones, situación que indica el impacto del festival entre los jóvenes de la región.
Fundamentalmente, es para este sector de la población que se organiza el encuentro Formación 2016, espacio académico del RMFF que este año celebrará su segunda edición los días 27 y 28 de junio en las instalaciones del club de playa Blue Parrot en Playa del Carmen,
con cuatro mesas de trabajo cada día en las que destacadas figuras de la industria cinematográfica compartirán sus conocimientos con los asistentes.
El Riviera Maya Film Festival ofrecerá una conferencia de prensa el próximo 14 de junio en la Ciudad de México en la que se darán a conocer todos los títulos de la programación, las películas seleccionadas para participar en la sección competitiva Plataforma Mexicana y el programa completo de Formación 2016.
