Bacalar, Donde una parte del arco iris pinta el agua

En el tiempo en que piratas y corsarios dominaban la costa oriental de Quintana Roo, una de las poblaciones más importantes de la península tuvo que ser fortificada para resistir los ataques y sobrevivir a luchas e invasiones. Muchos años después, enriquecido con su historia y atractivo por su belleza natural, se convierte en un hermoso y tranquilo destino turístico.
San Felipe de Bacalar fue establecido en 1545 por el español Gaspar Pacheco, en 1642 la ciudad fue invadida y destruida por piratas y hasta 1726 la reconstruyeron, además de añadir a su distribución el Fuerte “San Felipe Bacalar”, erguido para proteger a la ciudad de futuros ataques. Hoy en día, la imponente construcción es un Museo que guarda interesantes objetos, e historia del siglo XVIII, aparte de tener desde sus torres una vista majestuosa de las aguas turquesa y esmeralda.
Ahora con el paso del tiempo, el territorio alrededor de la Laguna de Bacalar, se convierte en un destino turístico lleno de paz y tranquilidad, donde el mayor atractivo es el cambio de color en sus aguas con el paso de las nubes, con la luz del sol, con el agua de las tormentas, donde se distinguen distintas tonalidades que van desde el blanco hasta el azul oscuro y casi negro, pasando por los verdes y turquesas. Es como si una parte del arco iris se postrara sobre las aguas del lugar que se conoce como La Laguna de los Siete Colores.
Con una longitud de cerca de 50millas, la Laguna de Bacalar es la segunda extensión de agua más grande en nuestro país. Se encuentra localizada en la parte sur del estado de Quintana Roo, a escasos 30 minutos de la frontera con Belice y a aproximadamente 2.5 horas de Playa del Carmen.
El agua clara y la arena suave son perfectas para nadar y tomar el sol, pero también se puede pescar, esnorquelear, dar paseos en kayak y en lancha, excursiones en bicicleta, rutas por la selva y avistamiento de aves. Si es que puedes despegarte de la belleza de la laguna, las ruinas de Calakmul, Kohunlich y Dzibanche, se encuentran cerca de Bacalar y te harán sentirte envuelto en otra era.
Para los enamorados de los cenotes, esos mágicos agujeros en la tierra que son sagrados para los Mayas, el Cenote Azul con sus 200metros de profundidad es realmente fascinante, a simple vista parece que no tiene fondo y se considera el más grande de toda la Península, puedes admirar su belleza disfrutando deliciosos mariscos en el restaurant, o nadando en sus frescas aguas. Para los más aventureros también el buceo está permitido.
Como puedes ver Bacalar es un pequeño pueblo con mucho que ofrecer, puedes pasar unos días o hasta un mes y nunca terminarás de descubrir la magia natural que hay en él. Puedes tomar el sol por horas o contemplar el vaivén rítmico de sus aguas desde una hamaca, andar en bicicleta por la selva y escuchar el canto de las aves, o dar una caminata por el pueblo y respirar la calma de sus calles.
Como muchos de los pobladores comentan; Bacalar es un lugar rico en historia y magia, que cultiva la memoria de sus ancestros: pescadores, comerciantes, guerreros y poetas. Y después de haber estado ahí y nadar en sus aguas, caminar por el pueblo y la plaza, intercambiar sonrisas con su gente, visitar el museo y observar su arquitectura, ver el armamento y las vestiduras y leer sobre su historia, para después sentarme a la orilla de la laguna a pensar e imaginar todo lo que ha pasado por aquí, maravillada por su belleza e hipnotizada por sus tonalidades no puedo negar esta afirmación: Bacalar La Laguna de los Siete Colores, es un lugar con mucha historia y lleno de magia.

In the time when pirates and buccaneers ruled over the east coast of Quintana Roo, one of the most important villages of the Peninsula, it had to be fortified to resist attacks, survive wars, and prevent invasions. Many years later, enriched with its history, and attractive by its natural beauty, it has become a beautiful and quiet tourist destination.
San Felipe de Bacalar was established in 1545 by the Spaniard Gaspar Pacheco. In 1642 the city was invaded and destroyed by pirates, and it was rebuilt in 1726 adding to its layout the Fort “San Felipe Bacalar”, erected to protect the city from future attacks. Nowadays, the impressive construction is a Museum that holds interesting objects and history of the XVIII Century, besides having a majestic view of the turquoise and emerald water from its towers.
Now, as time goes by, the territory around the Lagoon of Bacalar becomes a tourist destination full of peace and tranquility, where the biggest attraction is to watch the water changing colors as the clouds pass by, with the sun light, with the water of the storms, where different tonalities can be seen from white to dark blue, almost black, passing by green and turquoise. It’s like if a part of the rainbow was placed over the waters of the lake known as The Lagoon of the Seven Colors.
With a length of close to 50 miles, the Lagoon of Bacalar is the second biggest body of water in our country. It is located in the southern part of the state of Quintana Roo, just 30 minutes away from the border with Belize, and approximately 2.5 hours from Playa del Carmen.
The clear water and the soft sand are perfect for swimming and taking in the sun, but you can also go fishing, snorkeling, kayaking, boating, biking, exploring jungle routes, and bird watching. If you can take yourself away from the lagoon, the ruins of Calakmul, Kohunlich, and Dzibanche, are really close to Bacalar, and will make you feel caught in another era.
For the ones who love the cenotes, those magic holes on the earth that are sacred to the Mayans, the Cenote Azul (Blue Cenote) with its 200 meters of depth is truly fascinating and seeming bottomless. It is considered the biggest cenote on the Peninsula, and you can admire its beauty while enjoying delicious sea food at the restaurant next to it, or swimming in its fresh water. For the most adventurous, scuba diving is allowed.
As you can see, Bacalar is a small town with many things to offer. You can spend a few days or even a month here, and you will never finish discovering the natural magic in it. You can take in the sun for hours, watch the rhythmical movement of the water from a hammock, ride a bike through the jungle, listen to the birds singing, or walk around the town and breathe the calm in its streets.
As many of the people here comment, Bacalar is a place rich in history and magic that cultivates the memory of its ancestors: fishermen, merchants, warriors, and poets. And after being here, swimming in its water, walking in the town and the plaza, exchanging smiles with its people, visiting the museum, observing its architecture, seeing the armor and clothing, and reading about its history, for later sitting on the shore of the lagoon to think and imagine all that has passed through this place, amazed by its beauty, and hypnotized by its hues I can’t deny this statement: Bacalar The Lagoon of the Seven Colors, is a place with lots of history and full of magic.
